Look within

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”    Aristotle

Paulo Coelho has written many books like the Alchemist, Eleven minutes and Aleph. His wisdom and understanding teach us to search within, and discover our real treasure.

He tells the story of three Gods who want to hide the secret of life from humankind.

One day the gods were discussing the secret of life and where they should hide it so that men and women could not find it.

Bury it under a mountain, one god suggests.  No, the others counter, they will find a way to dig up the mountain and uncover it.

Put the secret of life in the depths of the deepest ocean, another god suggests.  No, the others say, one day they will find a way to travel to the depths of the ocean and will find it there.

Put the secret inside them, suggests another, they will never think to look for it there. All the gods agreed, and so the secret of life was hidden within us.

Whenever I struggle, I often want to run or find a solution outside myself.

In the stillness.  In my pain.  The answers are always within.

    1. Well I think we believe that looking outside ourselves, or to others is a quicker or easier, option. Looking within takes effort and patience. It takes us away from the noise and busyness of life and makes us face our fears. I think it’s worth all of that, to find my answers! Thankyou Diana.

  1. What a great story. Beautiful image at the top with wonderful Aristotle quote.
Patience to listen. Our culture is so geared toward the quick fix. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all learned to go within. Maybe addictions would lessen greatly.

    1. Interesting that you should speak of addictions Mary. I have been reading and listening to some teachers about addictions. How we develop a relationship with addictions, to help numb the wound within us. Once we heal the wound within, we no longer need that relationship with drugs. Seems easy to say, but very difficult to do. Thankyou for your comment. 🙂

      1. Yes, that is exactly what addictions do. People self medicate their pain. Then the only way they can feel normal is with that substance or behavior. Then once they are numb, they can’t heal. Such a vicious circle.

  2. The answer is within, there’s nowhere else to search. I know I can trust this truth, and it brings peace. There are those days when I’m struggling so hard just to stay above some distress (of my own making), that I forget. And the circle is complete, because the beginning of the storm (for me) is also within.

    1. You are right MK. Perfect reflection of how it happens. Not always what we want to hear, but when we sit in stillness and know this is the truth; we also start to live fully. Thankyou for your thoughts.
