Unlearning

How does the true man of Tao
Walk through walls without obstruction
And stand in fire without being burnt?

Not because of cunning or daring,
Not because he has learned –
But because he has unlearned.

Inspirational Taoist Quotes and Stories by Chuang Tzu

Since my son’s death I have had to unlearn all the old beliefs, patterns and illusions that I trained myself to live by.  It isn’t easy to do, but it is the only way to create space within and to expand into our authentic, unlimited self.  Let go of what no longer serves you.  Unlearn.

  1. Yes, unlearning the old tapes is hard because so many of them are buried deep in our subconscious. Many are pre-verbal. Loving and compassionate self forgiveness for whatever comes up can be so healing…as you know, dear Karen.<3

  2. Unlearning is not the same as forgetting. It transcends the experience and provides guidance toward a new path from yesterday’s experiences. It is a difficult task, yet worth every ounce of effort.

  3. I am not going to pretend to know what you have endured, Karen, but it makes sense that in order to thrive, you would have to unlearn living life the old way. From what I can tell, you are doing an admirable job. ❤️

    1. Thankyou Jennifer and although I was forced in a way, to confront my unlearning, I think we all need to do this in order to grow. I appreciate your support and comments here. 💚❤️💚

  4. This one hits home. You’re so very right. And so much of what we learn here does not suit when we begin to become more enlightened. I look back and think–sheesh. Profound, eh? Sheesh:).

  5. I know it is different … my type of grief compared to your grief. However, I do understand what you mean that you had to ‘unlearn’ previous beliefs. It is one’s belief system that is the hardest part to resurrect after a personal crisis.

    1. I think there is a universal grief within all our stories Elizabeth and you are right, we all have to face unlearning what no longer serves us after a crisis. Thankyou for being here ❤️

  6. The old tapes are *tough* to erase and seem to play at the *most* inopportune times. When I am visited by an old monologue that’s no longer useful/helpful/wanted, I picture it as a little green monster that I must stuff securely back into a jar, with a lid that closes tightly. Out with the old/bad, in with the new. Thank you, Karen, for *always* inspiring and brightening my day….

    1. Ha yes, there are a few green monsters stuffed in a jars all over the world Lori! I feel like those monsters take up far too much energy in this precious life and so let’s just throw the jar and the monster out for good and be present with what is. ❤️ thanks for your comments xx
